Pathogen description:
Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococci) are gram-negative, non-motile and non-sporulated diplococci. Of the eleven species of Neisseria that colonize humans, only two are pathogens, N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitis. N. gonorrhoeae is the causative agent of sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea that is the third most common sexual disease. Worldwide, about 62,2 millions cases of gonorrhoea are registered. The simultaneous infection by Chlamydia trachomatis is common.
